Trekking on the Larapinta Trail

The Tait family recently travelled to the Red Centre for the first time, flying into Alice Springs, to take part in a 3 day trek on the Larapinta Trail in the McDonnell ranges. They trekked as part of a small guided group; on Day 1 tackling an 8km walk around the Ormiston Gorge with a welcome dip in the waterhole at the end; a 15 km hike on Day 2 up to the ridge of the Heavitree Range, and on to Counts Point, with iconic views of the trail; concluding on Day 3 with an early morning hike to the top of Mt Sonder, the 4th highest peak in the area, to watch the sun rise – a challenging but rewarding 16km round trip with incredible views of the stunning Central Australian range. Each night they slept in swags under the stars, a novel experience. All in all the trip was unforgettable, and the family are keen to return one day to see some of the other must-sees of the region, including Kings Canyon.
